From Railroad Stop To Cattle Town

Acting as the gateway to eastern Oklahoma, Chouteau is named after famous fur trader Auguste Chouteau. Originally called Cody’s Creek, Chouteau was first known as a prominent stop along the Missouri, Kansas and Texas railroad in 1871. Originally settled by Riley Lindsey, the town soon became known as a thriving cattle town, driving the economy and shaping the character of the community for years to come.

Amish Roots

Known for its rural character and small-town personality, Chouteau quickly became home to the largest Amish community in Oklahoma after an epidemic forced the settlement out of Mazie causing them to settle in Chouteau. The town soon became the center of Amish culture, having many Amish owned restaurants, bakeries, furniture and other stores located throughout the community.
