Overview & Context
Langley is located in the northeast corner of Mayes County, Oklahoma along of Highway 82 and 28 – along the foothills of the Ozarks about 60 miles from Tulsa. Located along the southwestern banks of The Grand O’ Cherokee Lake (Neosho/Grand River), Langley hosts the Grand River Dam Authority Building which is one of the largest public power utilities in Oklahoma.
Langley is comprised of approximately 1.43 square miles of land and is home to much of the regions outdoor recreation activities accompanied by a genuine, small downtown character. Similar to other towns in the region, Langley is anticipating population growth due to the increase in economic opportunity coming to the region in the near future.
History
A Small Town On The Edge Of Grand Lake
Named in honor of Oklahoma Senator J. Howard Langley, the Town of Langley was settled after the construction of the Pensacola Dam in the 1940s. The dam offered direct access to the Town from across The Grand O’ Cherokee Lake (Neosho/Grand River), opening up the region and attracting new settlers.
The land was originally owned by Cliff Bogle, who divided the lands into lots that were publicly dedicated to the Town. As the town started to grow, the community established a Town Council to lead the development of public services such as utility infrastructure, public services, roadways, and schools.
The rapid growth of the Town launched a new commercial hub in the region leading to growing businesses such as commercial stores, lumber yards, hotels, restaurants and the creation of the first area newspaper “The Langley News”.
